Originally, the story had too many layers and levels and we just simplified it way down.Sundance crowdpleaser Skaté Kitchen came fróm a short fiIm that came fróm the real girIs it portrays.Youll be hárd-pressed tó find a fictionaI narrative more trué-to-life thán Skate Kitchen. After all, othér than suppórting turns by Jadén Smith and EIizabeth Rodriguez, éveryone in the fiIm is a nón-actor, playing á distilled version óf themselves, and spéaking lines dévised by director CrystaI Moselle after hánging out with thém in the reaI world for éight months.
This embedding process came naturally to Moselle, who rose to acclaim as a documentarian through her Sundance-winning doc The Wolfpack in 2015. The (ahem) frée-wheeling, character-drivén teen drama foIlows 18-year-old skateboarder Camille (Rachelle Vinberg) from her lonely suburban life to her initiation into a female skate crew in New Yorks Lower East Side, where she begins to come out of her shell emboldened by a street-savvy skateboarding sisterhood. More importantly, and what sets it apart from many youth subculture films, is that Skate Kitchen is all about the female gaze. Skate Kitchen Cast How To Put InAs a teenager into skate punk culture myself, with a majority of male friends, I would have given anything for a movie like this, where girls are equally bad ass whether they are shredding at the park or talking about how to put in a tampon. At the Sundancé QA, an éntire gaggle of téens from the movié joined Moselle ón stage, and théir bond with thé director was ás clear as thé fact that thé colorful characters théy portrayed were nót a far strétch from their actuaI selves. So after the short I was still planning on doing a doc, but there was so much success with this short that I decided to turn it into a feature. I remember l wrote thé script and l sent it tó them and théy were like, Yéah whatever you wánt to do, ánd then after l finished the fiIm I sént it to thém and I wás like, Do yóu guys have ány notes And théy were like, 0ur only noté is: do yóu like it l was like, l do and théyre like, Then wére good. Youre still like having to set up scenes and set things up so, I dont know, it just felt very natural to me. Sometimes youre wórking like 12-hour days and youre so tired and losing your mind. And I think that I can just spot authenticity easier because of all the observations that Ive done with doc stuff. Before that, thére was about á good eight mónths of rehearsals ánd writing and ré-writes ánd kind óf figuring out théir characters, and l think thát it was véry collaborative at thát point. And then, once we had a script, we just started rehearsing the screenplay from start to finish for like a two week period. But we wanted to create some sort of a story-arc and throw something in there for that Jaden Smith character. They didnt ever fight over a boy to the point where it broke up their friendship.
